It was built thousands of years ago, but no one knows exactly how or why. Some people think it was used for special ceremonies or to tell time by watching the stars. The stones are so big that it’s hard to imagine how people moved them without machines! Stonehenge is an important part of history and a place many people visit to learn about the past.

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire, England. It was built over 4,000 years ago during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods. The monument consists of a ring of large standing stones, each around 4 meters high and weighing several tons. Some stones are topped with horizontal stones called “lintels.” Stonehenge remains a mystery because we don’t know exactly why it was built. Some theories suggest it was used as a burial site, a place for religious ceremonies, or even an ancient calendar to track the movements of the sun and the stars. People are also amazed by how the stones were transported and erected, especially since the tools available at the time were very simple compared to today. The stones are believed to have been transported from quarries many miles away, possibly using wooden sledges or rolling logs.

Stonehenge is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts millions of visitors each year. It’s an important part of British history and a symbol of ancient human achievement.

Read and circle the words you know.

Then answer.

Where is Stonehenge?

How old is it?

Why is Stonehenge special?

What shape are the stones arranged in?

What do some people think Stonehenge was used for?

Maestra Katia

Stonehenge is a very old and mysterious circle of huge stones in England.
